The three rites of the Order of Christian Funerals

Part 1

The Vigil (Wake)

Usually held the evening before the funeral, at the funeral home or church

1

Greeting

The priest or deacon welcomes those present and opens with the Sign of the Cross and a brief introduction.

2

Scripture Reading

One or more scripture passages are read, chosen to bring comfort and proclaim the hope of resurrection.

3

Homily or Reflection

A brief reflection on the readings and the life of the deceased in the light of faith.

4

Intercessions

Prayers offered for the deceased, the family, and all who mourn.

5

Words of Remembrance

Family or friends may share memories and reflections about the deceased. This is the customary time for eulogies.

6

Closing Prayer

The vigil concludes with the Lord's Prayer and a final blessing.

Part 2

The Funeral Mass

The central liturgy of the Order of Christian Funerals, celebrated in the parish church

1

Reception of the Body

The priest meets the coffin at the church door, sprinkles it with holy water (recalling baptism), and places a white pall over it.

2

Procession to the Altar

The coffin is brought to the front of the church, near the Paschal candle. The entrance hymn is sung.

3

Liturgy of the Word

The scripture readings chosen by the family: First Reading (OT), Responsorial Psalm, Second Reading (NT), and Gospel. The priest gives a homily reflecting on the readings and the hope of resurrection.

4

General Intercessions

Prayers for the deceased, the bereaved family, and the universal Church. Family members may read these.

5

Liturgy of the Eucharist

The preparation of gifts, Eucharistic Prayer, and Holy Communion. Family members may bring the gifts to the altar.

6

Final Commendation

The most solemn moment of the funeral. The priest incenses the coffin and prays the Song of Farewell, commending the deceased to God's mercy.

7

Procession to the Place of Committal

The coffin is carried out of the church as the recessional hymn is sung. The funeral procession forms to travel to the cemetery.

Part 3

The Rite of Committal

The final prayers at the cemetery or place of interment

1

Scripture Verse

The priest or deacon opens with a brief scripture passage.

2

Prayer of Committal

The presider prays over the grave or place of interment, commending the body to the earth and the soul to God.

3

Intercessions

Brief prayers for the deceased and for those who mourn.

4

Lord's Prayer

All pray the Lord's Prayer together.

5

Final Blessing

The priest blesses those present and may sprinkle the grave with holy water one final time.
